We made sure to get here at just the right time to snap this picture. The beams last only a few minutes and then disappear until the next day's sunlight. It was an amazing sight to see, and something that I'm certain to visit again.

Daniel Wheeler > We spent the day out on Green Lake just North of Whistler. The lake is glacier fed, which creates this tranquil green color. Although the guide books say it's too cold to swim, we jumped in since it was a very hot 28°.

Daniel Wheeler > One of my favorite areas within the National Park was along Norbeck Pass. The mountains are big, intimidating, and seem to go on forever. The colors were especially dark when I took this picture because it had been raining all day, which turned the reds and pinks to a burgundy / purple. The sun managed to peek through the clouds for just a minute, and illuminated some of the higher peaks in the background making for one of my favorite shots from the trip.

Daniel Wheeler > Another "easy" hike in Dunsmuir California leads you to Mossbrae Falls. We really did think this was going to be easy, until we realized that the trail is right beside the railroad tracks. This presented an interesting mental challenge considering there were some narrow, steep sections of trail where there wasn't very much room to dodge the train. But, we figured that we'd hear the train from miles away and have plenty of time to move out of it's way IF a train did happen to pass by. Well, as it turns out, a train did come, and we had ~10 seconds of warning before it roared past us. We were able to duck along the steep embankment and watch as it lumbered by. After the train passed, we quickly walked the last half mile to see the falls. They're beautiful, and we would have liked to stay longer but the light was dwindling and we still had to hike back. It's interesting how when I look at this picture, I think of loud trains. Really gives credence to the saying, "it's not the destination, but the journey..."

Daniel Wheeler > Proxy Falls is so big that it's hard to capture on film. This photo was taken from the base of Lower Proxy Falls. To better see the scale of the Falls, I had Oneea stand next to the waterfall. That picture is found in the People gallery. At any rate, this is probably my most favorite waterfall from the trip. The water is feathery and welcoming, and the surroundings so green...The falls just invite you to stay for the day and enjoy the natural setting.

We drove all night and saw less than 5 cars along the highway in the middle of Oregon. We pulled into the Painted Hills around midnight and parked at the trailhead for the Lookout. The next morning, I woke up at 5am to make sure I could watch the sun rise from the East. I was shocked at the alien beauty of the hills and spent the next 3 hours walking up and down the ridge in amazement. Even more amazing was the fact that I was the only one taking in this beautiful sight. Not one other soul in the park to witness another day beginning in the John Day Painted Hills.
